Orthopaedics

The musculoskeletal system is the foundation of our daily lives – it allows us to walk, run, sit and stand. However, when there is a breakdown, pain or limitation of mobility, it significantly affects quality of life.

This is where orthopaedics comes to the fore – a medical discipline that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.

What is orthopaedics?

Orthopaedics is a specialised medical field that deals with problems of the bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments. It aims to restore musculoskeletal function, relieve pain and improve the quality of life for patients of all ages – from children to seniors.

Orthopaedics mainly focuses on:

  • diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders (e.g. arthrosis, scoliosis, flatfoot)
  • treatment of injuries (fractures, sprains, ligament tears)
  • conservative and surgical treatment
  • design and application of orthopaedic devices (braces, insoles)
  • cooperation with physiotherapists and other professionals

Who is an orthopaedic surgeon and what are his/her competences?

An orthopaedic surgeon is a doctor with a specialty in orthopaedics. During diagnosis, he uses clinical examination, imaging methods (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound) and other specialized tests. Based on the results, he or she proposes a treatment plan, which may include physiotherapy, medication, orthopaedic devices or surgery.

In our orthopaedic outpatient clinic we are dedicated to:

  • acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain,
  • diagnosis and treatment of deformities (e.g. scoliosis, flat feet, hallux valgus),
  • postoperative care and return to movement.

How is the examination at our clinic?

A thorough interview is followed by a musculoskeletal examination, including functional tests and range of motion assessment. If necessary, we use modern imaging technology. The physician will then design an individualized treatment plan, which may include pain medication, rehabilitation recommendations, manual therapy, bracing, or suggesting surgical solutions.

The most common orthopaedic problems encountered

  • Arthrosis of knees, hip joints, shoulders
  • Spinal pain and scoliosis
  • Sprains, fractures and ligament damage
  • Deformities of the feet and toes (hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, pes planus, metatarsalgia, pes transversoplanus)
  • Various forms of inflammatory joint diseases

The importance of orthopaedics in prevention

As in podiatry, prevention plays a key role in orthopaedics. Early detection of movement disorders can significantly influence the further development of the disease and prevent the need for surgical interventions.

Preventive examinations should not be forgotten, especially:

  • athletes (risk of overtraining and injuries),
  • children in the growing period
  • seniors (risk of osteoporosis and fractures),
  • persons with sedentary occupations or one-sided load.

Orthopaedics is an integral part of comprehensive musculoskeletal care. At our clinic we offer expert care with an individual approach and an emphasis on prevention.
