Ankle pain

Ankle pain can have a variety of causes, ranging from mild problems, such as a pulled muscle, to more serious problems that may require medical attention.

Causes

  1. Ankle sprain (sprain)

Ankle sprains are the most common cause of pain and occur when the ligaments around the ankle are stretched or torn. It can happen when you take a wrong step, play sports or fall.

  1. Bone fractures and cracks

If a severe injury occurs, such as a fall or impact, the ankle bone may be broken. These injuries are usually very painful and may require immediate medical attention.

  1. Arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)

Chronic inflammatory diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can cause pain in the ankle. Osteoarthritis often occurs with increasing age and is caused by wear and tear on the articular cartilage.

  1. Tendinitis (tendinitis)

Inflammation of tendons in the ankle area, such as the Achilles tendon, can cause pain, especially when moving. Tendinitis often occurs after overexertion or improper movement.

  1. Excessive load

Frequent and prolonged overloading of the ankle, for example during sports or long periods of standing, can lead to micro-damage and pain.
